“I am originally from Norway and most of my family still lives over there. At the age of 20, I decided to pursue a career as an airline pilot and I moved to Arizona, where I attended flight school, landing my dream job as a pilot with American Airlines in 1999. Needless to say, besides being a mom, I have a passion for speed, flying and traveling. I have traveled to every state in the U.S., to many of the Caribbean Islands, and to Europe as well as Latin America. I thoroughly enjoy visiting and experiencing new countries and cultures.”
The rewards of motherhood:
Very often it can be the small things: When she suddenly takes my hand while we’re walking, the incredible poems and sweet notes that she makes for me, the never-ending hugs and kisses, when she calls just to say I love you, when she thanks me for everything I do for her, when she picks up her dirty laundry (without me nagging!), the way she has this gift of reaching out to help someone in need (could be a friend or stranger). I’m just a very blessed, proud and thankful mom.
The toughest parts:
To be successful as a mom and as a career woman. It’s definitely a balancing act! As a Senior First Officer, I can get an excellent schedule flying day trips, with weekends off, holidays off, and one month of vacation during the summer. I love my job, but it’s way more important being a mom and being present.
On keeping her sense of self:
Sometimes, all it takes is some quiet time with candles, relaxing music and a glass of red wine. Other times I feel the need to go for an intense spinning session or a quick jog. My boyfriend Mark and I love to go boating and spend time on the water. The ocean is so very calming and therapeutic in its own way.
