Go to the Bahamas and Forget Your Dramas

Let us introduce you to the SLS Baha Mar—
A five-star hotel in the Bahamas that embodies style, playfulness and luxury.

There’s a new level of luxury to be found in the Caribbean,

combining sophistication and leisure on a whole other realm. The sprawling multi-billion-dollar development that debuted in Nassau more than a year ago, going by the name of Baha Mar, is a coveted destination for those that seek azure waters, the best in culinary fare, a casino that keeps Vegas on its toes (the largest in the Caribbean), and true paradisiacal pastimes.

Embellished by views of New Providence’s Cable Beach, the 1,000-acre property consists of three hotels: the Grand Hyatt the Rosewood and the SLS. I opt for what distinguishes the SLS from the other two, the “lifestyle hospitality experience.”  Think: playful, hip, and sexy.

Situated on the westernmost side of the resort complex, the cotton candy pink building stands out against the baby blue sky. By the way, SLS is an acronym for “style, luxury and service” and they far exceed that expectation. From the moment, Vasco, my driver, picks me up at the Lynden

Pindling International Airport for the 10-minute drive, followed by David (and fellow bellhops) welcoming me to the hotel, to something as simple as the enthusiasm I hear on the other end of the line when I call room service for breakfast—everyone seems to be working in synchronicity to assure the experience is nothing less than wonderful.

High ceilings, within a beige decor, and atmospheric lighting set the mood and tone when you first enter the space. The lobby and its interior are trendy, spacious, and welcoming with masculine undertones and bold art hanging on the walls. And at the heart of it all is the much-celebrated Monkey Bar, the agora or social hub—the place where guests meet and mingle. If you can’t decide on the many activities, you can always cozy on up to the Monkey Bar and find an interesting conversation is just waiting to be had.

Massive glass doors lead to the pool area, the visual centerpiece and focal point of the property. Adding to the blues of the pools is the turquoise backdrop of the majestic Atlantic Ocean. There is of course the famed Privilege Pool, with its upscale pool parties and cabanas, but for a more relaxed setting, venture to the Bungalow Pool Bar & Grill. SLS guests have access to all of Baha Mar’s shared amenities, including six swimming pools, and activities. The property also has its own spa and fitness center, open 24 hours and accessible only to those with an SLS room key.

Once you’re ready to head to your room, you’ll be awed with the accommodations. The rooms and suites feature floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, signature bedding, Bahamian-designed furniture, white walls and a gray trompe l’oeil wallpaper mural by Avenue Interior Design. My personal favorite was the bathroom, with its dichroic glass doors that create a translucent pastel kaleidoscope effect. I referred to it as the “unicorn bathroom.”

In the gastronomy department you have several globe-spanning options: Chef Danny Elmaleh’s upscale Cleo Mediterráneo restaurant, with its acclaimed Mediterranean cuisine. Miami’s own chef Michael Schwartz is at the helm of Fi’lia, the Italian restaurant on property. If Japanese is what you prefer, you’ll find Katsuya by Starck serving up traditional Japanese sushi, along with robata grill offerings. And new to the property is Carna, a contemporary steakhouse under the command of legendary butcher, Dario Cecchini.

And no SLS property would truly be complete without the nightlife mien. Bond is the 10,000 square-foot nightclub located in Baha Mar. The interior is designed by Lenny Kravitz’ company, Kravitz Design (and you can certainly gather that by its lush black leather interior) it’s the premier nightlife destination on the island. But if the outdoors-music-combined-with-incredible-views is more your thing, check out Skybar. The only rooftop lounge in New Providence, Skybar is truly the first of its kind. It’s a covered pavilion perched on the 20th floor of the SLS, and the bar serves up crafted cocktails, along with the best views on the island.

If you’ve been thinking of traveling to the Caribbean and are in search of a property that encompasses beautiful beaches, incredible gastronomy, pool parties, a casino, a nightlife, majestic views and just a fun time to be had, the SLS Baha Mar is the ultimate luxe getaway for you.
