The Frank’s Month of Artistic Fun

Local art hotspot Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery and Exhibit Hall, or The Frank for short, in Pembroke Pines is conducting a trio of events in the month of June, all inspired by its Into Africa exhibition. The happenings begin on 6/1 with Story Time Hour. The book Emmanuel’s Dream: The True Story of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah by Laurie Ann Thompson will be read while children eight and under, plus their accompanying adults gather ‘round. Next on 6/15 is a Mask-Making & Kente Cloth Weaving Workshop for Kids, where children six and older will get inside the minds of expert Asante and Ewe weavers and their colorful and societally significant Ghanaian Kente cloth, while making masks and weaving hand-painted textiles. Capping off the Africa theme is a viewing of an educational film by National Geographic followed by the classic movie The Lion King on 6/22 outdoors at City Center Plaza.

The Frank is also a place for local artists to connect with each other, hosting “Frank Contemporaries,” a free monthly event that is both pop-up exhibition and meet-up where all are welcome. On 6/27, surrealist painter Alim Smith, visual artist Najja Moon, sculptor Ariel Ortega and street artist Sinclair the Vandal will be featured alongside a presentation about “The Blck Family,” a Miami-based creative community collective and “This Girls Lunchbox,” a queer women’s membership club. Luis Miguel Declares ¡México Por Siempre!

Latin American music legend Luis Miguel’s four-decade career is filled with superlatives. “The Sun of Mexico”—as he has been dubbed by his homeland—was the first Latino artist to have two Spanish-language albums go platinum in the U.S. In Central and South America, he garnered a staggering 34 platinum records, won five Grammys, had the most hits in the history of Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart, had plenty of successful, high-grossing tours, the list goes on…Miguel embraced ranchera and mariachi music on his most recent album ¡México Por Siempre! and will be bringing these songs and others from his storied career to BB&T Center on June 22. Chinese Art Immersion in Coral Springs

The Coral Springs Museum of Art will be giving visitors a look at the creations of notable contemporary Chinese visual artists from June 8-August 17. Each section of the show is named after the featured artist—Yifei Zhou is a master of Chinese Brush Painting, starting out as a child prodigy and was a student of some of China’s top practitioners of painting and calligraphy. His depictions of landscapes, flora and fauna are considered the epitome of the Brush Painting medium. Zhang Hong Mei’s wheelhouse is textile design as well as painting, becoming known via some of the top textile entities in China, Italy and England. Her works are strongly abstract, but do hearken back to historic Chinese realism in certain respects. Completing the trio are works by Xu De Qi, whose paintings are an intriguing blend of Chinese realism, pop art and ’60s and ‘70s Western poster styling, making him a VIP in art circles all over the world. A Night of Comedy with Chris Tucker

Actor and comedian Chris Tucker will be bringing his standup act to the relatively intimate confines of Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood on June 21—but this isn’t uncharted territory for the Hollywood star. He elicited many a chuckle during his frequent appearances on Def Comedy Jam in the ‘90s, before becoming a key part of the action/comedy Rush Hour franchise as Detective James Carter, Jackie Chan’s ever-present foil. Apart from Tucker’s live comedy (mature audiences only, please), don’t miss his performance in, the Oscar nominated film Silver Linings Playbook alongside Robert DeNiro, Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper. A Musical Theft of Lightning

Ancient mythology is innovatively brought into the modern day (and into live theater form) with The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical, happening June 25-30 at Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Percy is a troubled youth who, via some profound experiences, suddenly realizes Greek gods are real, he’s a demi-god and son of Poseidon. While struggling to control his newly found powers, he is pursued by monsters while on a quest to find Zeus’s missing lightning bolt and thwart a war between the gods. Critics have raved about this work of theater and it was nominated for three 2017 Drama Desk awards. For more information, visit BrowardCenter.org.
