Spring Preening – April 2018

By Angela Caraway-Carltona –

Beauty may start from within, but that doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in a few tune-ups that will help you look and feel better. From the latest workout trends to beauty breakthroughs and even flowers (to order for yourself), here are some of the best ways to refresh this spring.

If you have 45 minutes of free time, then you have time for the Australian fitness craze, F45 Training. The Aussie franchise, which has expanded to a thousand franchises in less than four years with gyms now popping up in Doral and Weston, offers a functional, 45-minute workout using the popular HIIT training: high bursts of cardio and strength training followed by a short rest period. During the group class, two to three personal trainers roam the room to correct your form and off er support, while nine video screens display examples of the exercise you’re currently doing at that particular station. F45 has 4,000 different exercises, so you’ll never repeat a workout—in other words, you can never use the “I’m bored” excuse again. 2575 Glades Circle, Suite 1A, Weston; 954.683.0119; 7500 NW 104th Ave., Suite B-102, Doral; 786.280.4498; f45training.com
Want to bring sleeveless back this spring? solidcore, a fitness studio that first launched in D.C. (Michelle Obama is a client and swears by it), has now opened its two Florida studios in Midtown Miami and Boca Raton—and this workout hurts so good. For 50 minutes you’ll do a Pilates-inspired routine on their custom machine cheekily named “Sweatlana,” with sports resistance cables ranging from 2 to 300 lbs. and, like its name implies, will leave you drenched in sweat. The high-intensity, low-impact workout focuses on squats, plank crunches and reverse lunges that are done very slowly, so no rushing through the movements. Hit solidcore three times a week and you’ll see a dramatic difference—just look at the former First Lady. 135 NE 32nd St., Miami; 786.759.1074; solidcore.co
An easy way to add beauty in your life is with flowers, and you can brighten up any room, or day, by ordering a unique arrangement from Bloom Box, where the flower boxes can be customized with a fitting message and arrangement sizes that come in “Woah,” “Classic” and “Mini.” Bloom Box is run by a Miami mother and her two daughters, and the flowers are purchased from local vendors every morning to fulfill the day’s orders. “Our process is quite artisanal,” says co-owner Eugy Alliegro, who does the creative design. “Although we let customers request a specific look, flower or color palette, most customers give us the freedom to surprise them, so we use the message to guide the mood of the floral design.” Alliegro says this spring expect to be surprised with soft palettes and lots of dahlias and tulips. Later this year, the company will off er a subscription package, where customers can receive fresh flowers on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis with inspiring and motivational messages. 305.351.1452; bloomboxmiami.com
These days, it’s OK to double-dip—at least when it comes to nails. Kieu Tran, who owns the new Nail District and Beauty in Davie with her two sisters, says customers are trading in gels for “dip-powder” manicures ($35-$40). “Dipping is harmless to nails if done right,” Tran says about the 30-to-45-minute treatment where you dip your nails into pigmented powder and seal it with a top coat. “It can last two, and sometimes three to four weeks, and we off er more than a hundred colors.” When it comes to other top trends to nail down this spring, Tran says to opt for almond/coffin-shaped nails instead of square and choose from different shades of high-shine chrome pigment that can enhance your nail color (there’s even a unicorn chrome pigment). 4430 Weston Rd.,Davie, 954.541.5555; naildistrictbeauty.com
One of the most luxe and self-indulgent facials in Miami right now can be enjoyed at The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, where you’ll not only leave with radiant angel-skin, but you’ll be so relaxed that you might not be able to function the rest of the day. During the 90-minute Glacial White Caviar Facial Ritual ($275), your skin will be treated to a series of steps with the Spanish beauty line from Miriam Quevedo, including a tingly fruit peel, an oxygen mask, a layering of decadent white caviar oil and hyaluronic acid to help plump the skin, and a to-die-for lymphatic drainage massage that seems to last forever (in the best possible way). If you really want to splurge, add on the Miriam Quevedo Hair and Scalp Ritual where they’ll exfoliate your scalp, then methodically knead it using ancient Japanese techniques, and treat your locks to a mask to help repair the ends. In Broward County, Dr. Carolina Vera says that oxygenating the skin is the best way to attain a coveted dewy complexion, and suggests the new OxyGeneo Facial ($150 introductory special), which boasts four technologies built into one machine. During the one-hour facial, your skin will be exfoliated using a device to get rid of dead skin cells, followed by an infusion of anti-aging or skin brightening serums; then, oxygen is delivered deep into the skin by infusing C02 bubbles; and finally, ultrasound is used to increase cellular metabolism. “It’s my favorite facial. It leaves your skin baby-soft, radiant and younger-looking. I describe it as a super-facial,” says Vera. Like all non-invasive procedures, you’ll want to do a series of treatments to see lasting results. The Vera Medical Institute, 1531 S. If you want a treatment with more anti-aging power, the hottest laser right now is Halo ($1200-$1750), a hybrid fractional laser that’s meant to diminish pore size, age spots and fine lines, and ultimately, increase production of our skin’s best friend: collagen. (Right now, the only spot that has the laser in western Broward County is Weston Center for Plastic Surgery.) Depending on what your skin needs, the laser can be used on low to high settings—you will feel it, but it’s tolerable since they apply a numbing cream before the procedure—and for the first day your face will be bright red, then pink and slightly swollen, and eventually will peel for a few days. You can get away with one session, but it’s recommended to have two treatments done two to six months apart. While it can take up to six months for collagen to rebuild, doctors say the result is plumper and more even toned skin. 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 4, Weston, 954.507.4540; plasticsurgeryweston.com

The quest for lush, long lashes keeps intensifying, but if you’re not a fan of fake lashes or can’t afford extensions, then you’ll need to channel the ’80s with a “perm.” Beauty guru, Caleb McGrew of SKIN at Junior & Hatter in Miami says the latest way to attain fluttering
lashes is a Lash Lift ($75). “Lash lifts are gentle perming solutions that are safe for the
eye area,” explains McGrew. “We use a water-based adhesive to glue the lashes to silicon rods on the eyes, and then apply a solution which permanently changes the shape and structure of the hair, resulting in lashes that always looked curled.” The procedure will transform your natural lashes in just 30 minutes, and the pumped-up results can last from six to eight weeks. skinbycaleb.com; 305.773.7138
If you’re a beauty booty collector (meaning your cabinets could rival a dermatologist), and a current fan of the NuFACE device, then you’ll want to get your hands on the newly released ($399). It’s an FDA-cleared, at-home microcurrent device that’s supposed to help tone and firm the body while smoothing out unwanted dimples. You’ll lather on a gel primer, then slowly glide the device’s probes in an upward motion, targeting areas such as your arms, abs, thighs and butt—spending some extra time holding it on trouble spots. For the best results, you’re advised to use it five days a week for the first 60 days. mynuface.com; also sold at Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Ritz-Carlton Fort Lauderdale, and several Hand & Stone locations.

The days of over-plucking brows are way behind us, and natural, fuller brows are here to stay this spring. If you need to “fake” wow brows, European Wax Center has a new product called Browfection Tinted Brow Builder ($20). “The product creates boldness through a fiber-in-gel formula that adds color, builds volume, and creates fullness while holding the hairs in place all day long,” says Melanie Coba, national brand ambassador of European Wax Center. “Simply apply the product with the direction of the hair growth for a more tailored result, or you can brush the hairs upward and inward. This creates a slightly wilder look that is very on- trend.” P.S. Your first wax there is free.
