Stay & Play Staycation Selection

You Deserve a Staycation with Your Sweetheart at Mr. C Coconut Grove

I’m a bit hesitant to share information about this hotel—that’s how fabulous it is! I want to keep it all to myself. A time capsule of a gem in Coconut Grove, it’s the kind of place that welcomes romance. Although it opened in May, the impression you get once you set foot in the lobby is of old-world glamour. I’m almost sure the scent of Champagne (that’s truly the name of the scent) piped through the air conditioning vents helps to set the stage. I envision Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner rendezvousing here, or perhaps turning a corner and running into Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.

There’s this sensation that wonderful things are about to unfold. Many a billets-doux will find its inspiration at Mr. C, and many a star-crossed lover will reminisce about their first meeting here.

In response to the stress associated with living in such a thriving port city to the world, this is our September selection for a staycation with your sweetheart.

The “C” in Mr. C is for “Cipriani,” a name synonymous with elegance and luxury in the sphere of hospitality. The brand’s portfolio includes hotels, residences and restaurants. The story begins in 1931 when Giuseppe Cipriani founded Harry’s Bar in Venice, Italy. A favorite of luminaries such as Ernest Hemingway, Orson Welles, and Truman Capote, this legendary destination is the birthplace of the Bellini (a mixture of white peach juice and sparkling prosecco). The empire in now in the hands of fourth generation family members, brothers Maggio and Ignazio Cipriani, and has expanded across the globe to include five Cipriani locations in New York and several more in London, Hong Kong, Porto Cervo, Venice, and Abu Dhabi.

The newest addition is the 100-room Mr. C Coconut Grove in Miami. With the backdrop of Biscayne Bay, and the wonderful lush foliage ubiquitous in this area of town, the property is a mini oasis. The decor throughout the hotel is elegant, masculine with nautical motifs—the building itself is designed to appear as a ship.

Fabulous things to experience while here are:

•  Il Giardino: Is the courtyard garden located on the lobby level, make sure to introduce yourself to Josh, the resident bartender. This is the spot for a before-dinner aperitif, or a nightcap. The playlist includes Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and Dean Martin; and on the last Thursday of the month they have a live jazz band playing for your enjoyment.

•  Bellini Restaurant & Bar: A contemporary Italian restaurant located on the top floor of the hotel. It boasts incredible views of Coconut Grove and the bay, and it offers indoor and outdoor seating. You absolutely must have a Bellini cocktail, it would be blasphemous if you didn’t, and we would have to revoke your cool kid street creds.

•  Menu options that are also a must: tortelli with spinach and ricotta, the grilled Colorado lamb chops with carrot purée, the Dover sole filet, and their homemade ice cream.

•  Bike Ride: What better way to enjoy Coconut Grove than to hop on a bike provided by the property? Head down the five-mile Commodore Trail, past Peacock Park to Vizcaya Museum & Gardens and make a day of it before returning to Mr. C and lounging poolside with cocktails.
